Christian Hagiography compiled by Société des Bollandistes. The first volume of Acta Sanctorum, the prestigious collection of ancient and medieval lives of saints (68 vol. in-folio), was published in 1643. Since then, a small group of hagiographers has been strenuously continuing the work of John Bollandus (+ 1665). "Methods may have progressed, as well as knowledge, even the aspect of the books has changed, but the spirit is always the same. It is the spirit of a team of specialists, entirely devoted to hagiographical research: only hagiography, but the whole of it (Latin, Greek, Oriental...)".

History of Sainthood in the Movies There is not a great quantity of well-known movies about saints or "sanctity," but many that do exist are award-winning films of rather high quality. There are also a large number of somewhat obscure movies and documentaries of more variable quality. This intriguing list was prepared by Dr. Paul Halsall for an upper-division course on the history of sainthood. Dr. Halsall is also responsible for other excellent relevant sites, such as the Internet History Sourcebook Project, which includes a Medieval Sourcebook, containing a guide to Saints' Lives.
