| Florian was an officer in the Roman army around 300 AD, holding a high position
in Noricum (now part of Austria). He served under the Emperor Diocletian, a ruthless persecutor who expected his
legions to dutifully assist him in exterminating Christians. Florian declined to do so, declaring that he was himself
